Healthy Start for Families

Healthy Start for Families is an adapted version of the Healthy Start program targeting parents, guardians and children ages 0-5 years (siblings are welcome.) The program consists of a series of interactive, kid-friendly activities and cooking sessions, offered free of charge at participating early years centres, local family resource centres or community based organizations.

At the sessions you’ll gain practical ideas for encouraging healthy eating and active play with your children.

Delivery Methods

Early Learning and Childcare Delivery (Saskatchewan)

If your childcare centre/home, Pre-K or Headstart has received a Healthy Start training and would like to engage parents, this is for you! Your staff is invited to attend a Healthy Start for Families Workshop where you will learn how to deliver customizable sessions for your centre, childcare home, or classroom.

Family Resource Centre  (Saskatchewan & New Brunswick)

Healthy Start for Families is also for local family resource centres or community organizations who are looking to deliver health and wellness programs to parents and young children. This is a unique opportunity for parent and child to learn about healthy eating and active play together! Centre staff  first attend a Healthy Start for Families facilitator Workshop where they will gain information on how to deliver customizable sessions for families in your centre.

What is Healthy Start for families?

  • An evidence-based program developed and piloted by the University of Saskatchewan and Healthy Start team
  • A family-centred health and wellness initiative both for children and primary caregivers that stems from the Healthy Start initiative developed in Saskatchewan.
  • The goal is to provide increased opportunities to promote healthy eating and physical activity for children, parents and families in early learning settings, including childcare centres and pre-kindergarten programs.
  • Promotes bonding and quality time with children through family role modelling activities.

Who can participate in Healthy Start for families?

  • Parents from a participating Healthy Start childcare centre/home,  Pre-K or Headstart
  • Any interested parent participating in regular programming at a participating Family resource centre or other community-based organization

Why is Healthy Start for Families important?

  • It is possible that for the first time in modern history that children may have a shorter lifespan than their parents due to increasing prevalence and severity of childhood obesity (Daniels, 2006).
  • Canada is facing a childhood obesity epidemic, 1 in 4 children are either overweight or obese (Govt. of Canada).
  • The over-consumption of sugary beverages (e.g. soft drinks, fruit-flavoured juice, and energy/sports drinks) and increased screen time/sedentary lifestyle are linked to childhood obesity.
  • The role of parents and caregivers is what sets a foundation for healthy habits. Creating healthy role models is essential to improving the health and wellness of young children.

What does delivery in a early years centre look like?

  • A centre could offer three (or more) sessions, offered weekly, bi-weekly or monthly, delivered free of charge in the childcare centre/home, Pre-K or Headstart
  • Fun-filled, interactive and culturally-relevant
  • Easy, child-focused cooking and active play activities for parent and child
  • Healthy eating and active play resources are shared
  • An assortment of fun materials in our Active Play Equipment (APE) kit
  • Simple, healthy food item(s) or snacks to sample at each session

What does delivery in a family resource centre look like?

  • Specialized workshops are delivered in a Family resource centre
  • The Family resource centre decides how many sessions will be offered
  • Fun-filled, interactive and culturally-relevant
